The abundance of food in the ocean currents attract giant sperm whales, basking seals, frolicking dolphins and other marine mammals close in to the coast, along with an array of ever attendant birdlife.  The mountains and woodlands are alive with native birdsong.

hamner Geologically speaking, the area is still young.  This is most apparent in the natural hot waters, which bubble up from the centre of the Earth at Hanmer Springs, in the deep ravines and terraces of the rivers, which etch the landscape, and in the sculpted coastline of Kaikoura.  For rock hounds and fossil hunters, the region is a treasure trove.

A forest or beach walk, soaking in hot pools, trout fishing and whale watching are just some of the more relaxing ways to unwind.   

Or if it’s an adrenalin rush you’re after there’s plenty to choose from to satisfy your appetite for adventure - bungy jump off an historic bridge, take a helicopter flight, jet boat or raft a surging river gorge, mountain bike on a forest track or tackle heavier terrain on quad bikes, snorkel amongst seals and dolphins or ski or snowboard in perfect snow conditions.
